Fall 2000 Pirate Football!

Well, let's just say that the home opener on September 9 against West Seattle is over, and be done with it.

The Pirates scored first; the Indians needed only :23 to score after the Pirates, and went on to win 55-14.

More bad news: Andrei Serebryakov re-dislocated his shoulder...

Here's what the Tacoma News-Tribune thinks about the Nisqually League this year:

"Football 2000: Filling the holes -- Cards, Cruisers try to plug gaps"

Corey Brock; The News Tribune

"Just because Eatonville and Orting lost a ton of players from last season's playoff teams doesn't mean the Cruisers and the Cardinals can again rule the Nisqually League. It's safe to say that both won't run and hide from the rest of the league like they did last season.

The Cruisers need a quarterback, but they always seem to find one.

The Cardinals need someone - or more than one - to fill in at tailback, since Keith Smith and Marty Pettit graduated.

The Foster Bulldogs might have the best chance to unseat Eatonville and Orting at the top of the standings. Foster junior quarterback A.J. Geiss is the top returning signal-caller in the league.

The Vashon Pirates might just be a year away from making a serious playoff-run.

CHIMACUM COWBOYS

Storyline - No information provided.

EATONVILLE CRUISERS

Coach, year - George Fairhart (seventh).

Offensive set - I-formation; Defensive set - 5-2.

Returning starters - (4 offense): WR Donnie Stewart, 6-5, 220, Sr.; WR Randy Throop, 5-10, 175, Sr.; WR
Doug Drake, 6-2, 180, Sr.; WR Tom Kneeshaw, 6-2, 200, Sr. (5 defense): LB Donnie Stewart, 6-5, 220, Sr.;
LB Randy Throop, 5-10, 175, Sr.; DB Tom Kneeshaw, 6-2, 200, Sr.; DB Justin Ley, 5-10, 165, Sr.; LB
Anthony Cobe, 6-10, 210, Sr.

Schedule - Sept. 8 at Emerald Ridge; Sept. 15 Highline; Sept. 22 at Chimacum; Sept. 29 Foster; Oct. 6 at
Vashon; Oct. 13 Klahowya; Oct. 20 Port Townsend; Oct. 27 at Orting; Nov. 3 Steilacoom.

FOSTER BULLDOGS

Coach, year - Mike Shannon (20th).

Offensive set - One back.

Defensive set - 5-2.

Returning starters - (9 offense): QB A.J. Geiss, 6-2, 192, Jr.; WR Vince Pelagio, 6-3, 160, Sr.; WR Anthony
Rankin, 5-9, 184, Sr.; WR Brad Parsons, 6-2, 196, Sr.; RB Sam Price, 5-9, 199, Sr.; OL Jason Mattson, 5-9,
204, Jr.; OL Patrick Buckmaster, 5-10, 205, So.; OL Chris Rarey, 6-4, 297, Sr.; OL Jeremy Ross, 6-1, 190, Jr.
(5 defense): LB Matt Hubbard, 5-9, 175, Jr.; DB Vince Pelagio, 6-3, 160, Sr.; DB Anthony Rankin, 5-9, 184,
Sr.; DB Michael Lee, 5-10, 162, Jr.; DL Tony Matautia, 5-8, 264, Jr.

Storyline - Now that Orting and Eatonville have suffered big losses due to graduation, it looks like the
Nisqually League is pretty wide-open. Look for the Bulldogs, who won only two games last season, to push
ahead with junior quarterback Geiss, an all-league player last fall.

Schedule - Sept. 8 Mount Rainier; Sept. 15 Orcas Island; Sept. 22 Orting; Sept. 29 at Eatonville; Oct. 6 Port
Townsend; Oct. 13 Chimacum; Oct. 20 at Steilacoom; Oct. 27 at Klahowya; Nov. 3 Vashon.

KLAHOWYA EAGLES

Coach, year - Brad Hamblet (second).

Offensive set - Wing-T.

Defensive set - 3-4.

Returning starters - (5 offense): QB Ryan Williams, 5-9, 155, Sr.; RB Eric Mischenko, 5-10, 165, Sr.; C Brett
Palmer, 5-11, 205, Sr.; TE Gabe Stephens, 6-2, 200, Sr.; G Joe Sullivan, 5-10, 205, Sr. (5 defense): CB Ryan
Williams, 5-9, 155, Sr.; CB Eric Mischenko, 5-10, 165, Sr.; NT Aaron Killbran, 5-8, 190, Sr.; ILB Josh Rost,
5-8, 185, Sr.; DT Sean O'Shaughnessy, 6-1, 215, Sr.

Storyline - Now playing football for just the third season, the Eagles should be better than they were last
season - although Klahowya didn't win a game and scored only 68 points in nine games. The defense wasn't
much better, allowing 260 points over those same nine games.

Schedule - Sept. 8 Evergreen (Seattle); Sept. 15 Hazen; Sept. 22 Vashon; Sept. 29 Steilacoom; Oct. 6 at
Orting; Oct. 13 at Eatonville; Oct. 20 at Chimacum; Oct. 27 Foster; Nov. 3 at Port Townsend.

ORTING CARDINALS

Coach, year - Marty Parkhurst (seventh).

Offensive set - Single back.

Defensive set - 3-4.

Returning starters - (3 offense): OT Tony Grote, 6-4, 255, Sr.; WR Clayton Rushmeier, 5-11, 165, Sr.; WR
Larry Schoenbachler, 5-10, 175, Sr. (3 defense): DB Larry Schoenbachler, 5-10, 175, Sr.; DB Clayton
Rushmeier, 5-11, 165, Sr.; LB Tony Olson, 6-0, 190, Sr.

Storyline - This much we know about the Cardinals: They lost their quarterback, top two tailbacks and an
all-area lineman. Still, because Orting played in so many lopsided game, it had the chance to give its younger
players a lot of time. Rushmeier is a very good kicker, as well.

Schedule - Sept. 9 at Lakeside; Sept. 15 Lindbergh; Sept. 22 at Foster; Sept. 29 at Port Townsend; Oct. 6
Klahowya; Oct. 13 at Steilacoom; Oct. 20 at Vashon; Oct. 27 Eatonville; Nov. 3 Chimacum.

PORT TOWNSEND REDSKINS

Storyline - No information provided

STEILACOOM SENTINELS

Coach, year - Mark Ross (20th).

Offensive set - Wing-T. Defensive set - 5-2.

Returning starters - (3 offense): OL Ryan Beene, 5-10, 240, Sr.; OL Eric Brown, 6-2, 210, Jr.; QB Kyle Ricks,
6-1, 175, Jr. (2 defense): DL Eric Brown, 6-2, 210, Jr.; LB Adam Krumiede, 6-1, 170, Sr.

Storyline - The Sentinels are down on experience, as several starters graduated, like standout tailback Ricky
Anthony, who is playing at a junior college in Arizona. "We have more players than we've had in a while,"
Ross said. "But some haven't played before."

Schedule - Sept. 8 at Tacoma Baptist; Sept. 15 at Evergreen (Seattle); Sept. 22 Port Townsend; Sept. 29 at
Klahowya; Oct. 6 at Chimacum; Oct. 13 Orting; Oct. 20 Foster; Oct. 27 Vashon; Nov. 3 at Eatonville.

VASHON PIRATES

Coach, year - Mark Henderson (fourth).

Offensive set - Wing-T. Defensive set - 5-2.

Returning starters - (8 offense): QB Chris O'Brien, 5-11, 170, Jr.; FB Sean Donnelly, 5-10, 200, Jr.; C Jordan
Cross, 5-10, 170, Jr.; OL Chris Anderson, 6-2, 190, Sr.; RB Andrei Serebryakov, 5-10, 175, Sr.; TE Joey
Korenek, 6-3, 240, Sr.; WR Andrei Chevalier, 5-10, 175, Jr.; OT Jacob Middling, 5-10, 200, So. (6 defense):
ILB Sean Donnelly, 5-10, 200, Jr.; DL Chris Anderson, 6-2, 190, Sr.; OLB Andrei Serebryakov, 5-10, 175,
Sr.; DT Joey Korenek, 6-3, 240, Sr.; OLB Andrei Chevalier, 5-10, 175, Jr.; DT Jacob Middling, 5-10, 200, So.

Storyline - The Pirates took their lumps last season, using a sophomore-dominated lineup. Still, Vashon won
three games and will likely double that this season. The Pirates have two guys named Andrei. Where else are
you gonna get that?

Schedule - Sept. 8 West Seattle; Sept. 15 Cascade Christian; Sept. 22 at Klahowya; Sept. 29 Chimacum; Oct. 6
Eatonville; Oct. 13 at Port Townsend; Oct. 20 Orting; Oct. 27 at Steilacoom; Nov. 3 at Foster.
