JV: Pirates 39! - Tacoma Baptist 8 -- Varsity: Pirates 53 - Tacoma Baptist 41

JV won very easily Vashon 38 - Tacoma Baptist 8! We'll see if it stays this easy later on against, say, Foster or Steilacoom!

Varsity played a really good game too, Q1 V 19 - TB 9; Q2 V 29 - TB 17, then having Tacoma Baptist come back to tie in the third but the Pirates finished up Q3 V 32 - TB 30 and the final Q4 V 53 - TB 41!

I had Aubrey R for 12pt 1pf; Asa S for 14pt 3pf; Allie M for 3pt 3pf; Maura L for 15pt! 3pf; Bridgette S with 2pt and a (re-) injured knee; Zoe B played well but 0pt 0pf; and Lorean S 7pt and 5pf :-(

Junior Varsity!

JV newcomer Samantha S drives in for 2; like a lot of young players she often drives in too deep under the basket before she puts the ball up.

Remember, Coach John sez:
"Find the blocks and get airborne"

I didn't get a lot of JV pictures at all: I got there at the half and was too busy yakkin' to people I hadn't seen in quite a while..

Varsity!

One thing I didn't really get any pictures of, but I liked a lot: Varsity played a lot of what I would call a trap defense, very effectively, on almost every Tacoma Baptist possession.

This was not a man-to-man full court press, but more of a zone trap: we would collapse two players on the ball before half-court; if the ball went across court the middle player would collapse across and another Pirate would come up on the outside; if the ball went down court, one Pirate would follow the ball and another would come up...

We only really got beat once on this as the ball went long down court, and Lorean was doing a great job down-court to cut off the long pass. We got a lot of turnovers off this!

This is probably going to be a make-or-break defense for us this year, because we don't have a lot of height or bulk to put down low for a strong post defense...

If you think you're seeing a lot of outside shots, you're right: we don't have much size for the inside game...

Lorean was playing post/forward and doing pretty well, but she's built more like a forward than a center, and she's gonna need someone to come off the bench to give her a breather.

Here she is (32) fighting for inside position against 14...

New Pirate Amber S and returning Pirate Erika S are both listed at 5'9", but that's what Lorean is listed at, too, so we ain't got no height.. And none of these three are what you'd call - err.. - chunky, if you get what I mean.

I ended up with Maura for 15 points!

Here we're coming back late in the third after Tacoma Baptist tied; we hit seven points in freethrows in the second half as one Tacoma Baptist player fouled-out, one ended with four, and three other players had three fouls each..
