Live Chat Transcript with Tonya Edwards

Dec. 9, 1998

Question:
It's time to wrap up this chat, Tonya. Any final thoughts?
Webmaster -- Anytown -- 1998/12/09 17:50

Answer:
I do want to thank you all for chatting with me tonight. And we must do this again sometime. Columbus fans -- there's a game on Saturday, against Colorado at 1:00 -- be there. Make sure you tune in this Sunday -- if you're not in Columbus -- if you're in Columbus, I expect to see you there -- when we host the Chicago Condors at 4 p.m. eastern time. Also, if I'm in a city near you or if there's an ABL team close to you, do come out and support the ABL.

Question:
Do you and the Quest feel like it's "us against the world" now and are you using that as motivation to win a third championship?
Kristi -- -- 1998/12/09 17:15

Answer:
No, I don't think it's us against the world, but I do think that we're going to have to play together to be successful and to bring a third championship back to Columbus.

Question:
How difficult is it for you to balance playing, coaching and family-life at the professional level?
ZCoach -- Knoxville -- 1998/12/09 17:11

Answer:
I think it's extremely difficult for me -- now more than anything - being coach is taking up all my playtime I used to enjoy. My personal life has been put on hold, so to speak, but I have six months to relax and play after the championship.

Question:
So, while off the court, what role do you take, friend, or coach? And, being that I am undertaking the same role as you (both player and coach), what hints can you give me to not alienate my teammates and how exactly should I run my practices?
Julia -- Brooklyn, NY -- 1998/12/09 17:39

Answer:
I guess first off I'm still just Tonya, and the people who I dealt with on a one-on-one personal basis, I'm still their friend, and we still hang out. I do think you have to be extremely stern in practice because you still have to make them perform, whether they want to or not. You have to say "Hey -- I am the coach and you need to be doin this."

Question:
Okay,Tonya,First my aunt in Ponitac knows you She's visting town sitting next to me and said hi!.Back to basketball,If you had a chance to draft college players from this year,Who would you draft?
Coach Michael Lewis -- Albuquerque -- 1998/12/09 17:27

Answer:
Well, I guess my first pick would be Chamique Holdsclaw. Then I'll have to take Larecha Jones who I coached in high school who is now playing for Ohio State.

Question:

keveesha kilpatrick -- chicago -- 1998/12/09 17:34

Answer:
Keveesha -- I'd love to meet you to -- come down and introduce yourself at the game on January 15th.

Question:
Is basketball a job to you or is it still fun?
Sandy -- LA -- 1998/12/09 17:34

Answer:
For the most part, it's still fun -- I truly enjoy the game. The coaching part seems like a more of a job for now, but I'm hoping to make it fun as well.

Question:
Tonya, how will you handle the pressures of Coaching & playing ball? Since practice is over what will you watch on tv tonight?
Cleo -- MS -- 1998/12/09 17:05

Answer:
I don't know. I'm hoping a movie is on so I can just sit and watch that until it's time for me to go to bed.

Question:
I have a little experiece for the yelling at the officials if you need it....Tennessee-Thompson-Boling Arena Section 114...sound familiar?
ZCoach -- Knoxville -- 1998/12/09 17:21

Answer:
Zsa -- Come on and see me -- I have a seat for you!

Question:
If you coach the team next season, will you remain as a player-coach or just head coach and no longer play?
ne blizz -- connecticut -- 1998/12/09 17:12

Answer:
I plan on playing as long as possible. If something interferes with that, I'll fall back on coaching. I really enjoy playing.

Question:
You have seen Nashville twice now. What do you see as the team's greatest strength?
Terri -- Nashville -- 1998/12/09 17:12

Answer:
Probably they're post play. They're extremely talented with Tracy Henderson and Venus Lacy. If you can get those two players on the same page, then Nashville will be extremely competitive.

Question:
What are your plans if you're playing AND coaching in the All-Star game?
Joanne -- Des Moines -- 1998/12/09 17:04

Answer:
That would be a nice situation to be in -- I'd probably sit on the sidelines most of the time and enjoy the game like the rest of the spectators.

Question:
When or are you going to name an assistant coach?
Kristi -- -- 1998/12/09 17:06

Answer:
Actually, I have already -- Beverly Williams and Andrea Lloyd are waiting to assume the chores.

Question:
Does your coach give you the green light to shoot the 3 at any point in the game?
Joe -- -- 1998/12/09 17:06

Answer:
Yeah -- I tell myself to shoot all the time.

Question:
What kind of music do you listen to? Do you have a favorite song right now?
ABL Fan -- -- 1998/12/09 17:08

Answer:
I do -- I probably listen to jazz and r&b mostly. I like Deborah Cox -- Nobody's Supposed to be Here. There's quite a few I like.

Question:
Oh, I think you could get lots of volunteers for the yell-at-the-officials job. Where do we try out?
Joe -- -- 1998/12/09 17:09

Answer:
You're gonna have to have floor seats...or a megaphone...

Question:
Do you still get advice from Brian Agler about upcoming games? Also, how did you feel when you found out he was leaving the team?
Kristi -- -- 1998/12/09 17:09

Answer:
Yes, I do still consult Brian about upcoming things and sometimes we review tapes together. I was a bit disappointed -- moreso by the timeliness of his decision, but I have to respect him for his decision.

Question:
Hey Tonya...how ya doing? I read in an article that you were trying to get in Touch with Pat Summitt after you got the coaching job...did it ever happen? And did you ever get that famous "Summitt Stare?":)
Lynn -- PA -- 1998/12/09 16:54

Answer:
There's not a player that's gone through that program that hasn't got the famous stare. I have talked with her, but not really about the coaching aspects yet. I'll catch her sometime this week.

Question:
I know lately you have been asked a lot of questions about your taking on the position of coach so my question is how do you unwind after a game (relax)? Do you have any hobbies?
Cleo -- MS -- 1998/12/09 17:09

Answer:
Unwinding for me is just being able to go home and lay down and pop in a movie (not a game tape) and watch TV.

Question:
Do Beverly and Katie make most of the substitution decisions while you are in the game?
Lynn -- PA -- 1998/12/09 16:55

Answer:
Starting off the game I have my first perimeter and post sub off the bench, and then I look to them to do a lot of the subbing or if I don't agree I'll make changes out on the court or go to the sideline or make signals.

Question:
What do you think of the UCONN Lady Huskies, Pretty impressive, huh?
jeff -- albuquerque -- 1998/12/09 16:57

Answer:
Very impressive. I look to them to do extremely well. They have a very balanced attack and tremendous depth.

Question:
Tonya, you are doing a wonderful job for being thrown in the fire. I like the "team" coaching concept. grin. There is only one thing missing. You need a designated "yell at the offical" person.
Caprice Dittmar -- Zanesville -- 1998/12/09 16:57

Answer:
(Laughing) I'm thinking about gettin' my mom because she likes to yell at the officials anyway.

Question:
As a coach myself I look at lots of tapes after a loss or victory,What is a after game post-performance like for you and do you grade yourself hard as well?
Coach Michael Lewis -- Albuquerque -- 1998/12/09 16:59

Answer:
Yeah - I continue to use film as a measuring stick because the tape don't lie. But normally I give myself a few days until I go back and review tape.

Question:
So what was your reaction to your 3 players missing the plane:)
Lynn -- PA -- 1998/12/09 17:00

Answer:
There was really no reaction because we can play with 10 or 7 players. The show must go on!

Question:
We're looking forward to seeing the Quest in San Jose in Jan. What do you think about the 1998 Lasers with the additions from Long Beach?
Cindi -- Union City -- 1998/12/09 17:01

Answer:
Extremely powerful. They probably are more quick-hitting than they have been in the past, especially with Clarissa Davis-Wrightsil, who on any given night can knock down 20-30 points. So, with that addition alone, I look to the Lasers to be really successful.

Question:
Hi COACH! How is it going so far? Have you heard from Katie yet about her surgery? Columbus is glad to have you!
Elizabeth Scott -- Columbus -- 1998/12/09 16:52

Answer:
Thank you. From what I hear, Katie is recovering quite well. I guess her surgery is very successful.

Question:
Hi Tonya! I've never seen a team run as a democracy before. How do you feel about all of the help you have coaching?
Joanne -- Des Moines -- 1998/12/09 16:52

Answer:
I am totally satisfied that the young ladies are taking it on their shoulders to keep the team successful. I welcome their input because I believe everyone has something important to say. And all the young ladies have been putting in numerous hours and so forth so they may know more basketball than I do!

Question:
Welcome to the chat, Coach Edwards. How are you tonight?
ABL Media Relations -- Palo Alto -- 1998/12/09 16:50

Answer:
Fine!! I'm finished with practice -- finished watching film, so now I can just watch TV!

This whole deal was originally done by Medius Interactive and the American Basketball League, but I saved what you're seeing here before it vanished forever. (Since I was a Seattle Reign season ticket holder, I feel they owe me something). Think of me as an historian. Future generations of young girls should know what was.
