October 12, 2011. Shot out my bedroom window at about 7:15 am, barely one hour before moonset, and about twelve hours after full moon. Canon EOS 1D Mk IV, EF 70-200mm f2.8L zoom lens @ 140mm, 1.4x extender; ISO 400; manual exposure, 320th sec at f5.6; hand-held, image stabilization on. ^ Drop down to see more choices ^ My copyright watermark does not appear on reprints

The supposed "Rule of Thirds" in photographic composition. It's not a rule - you won't get punished if you "don't". It's a guideline that's been around since about 1797. I think about it a lot when I'm composing photos in post-processing. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it makes sense. Sometimes it doesn't.
Go to the top A Peregrine falcon at Vashon High School, September 13, 2011This guy lives and hunts around the High School and in fact nests over on top of the microwave tower at the phone company building.
A Peregrine falcon at Vashon High SchoolCanon EOS 1D Mk IV, EF 70-200mm f2.8L zoom lens @ 280mm, 1.4x extender; ISO 3200 (it was overcast and about 5:15 pm, I was shooting soccer); aperture priority exposure, f5.6 at 8000th sec; hand-held, image stabilization on.
Go to the top A spring sunsetShot out my living room window. I kept watching the sun slowly break out of the clouds as it was sinking lower and lower, and finally the light was just perfect!
Canon EOS 5D Mk II, EF 24-70mm f2.8L zoom lens @ 24mm; ISO 400; manual exposure, f11 at 200th sec. ^ Drop down to see more choices ^ My copyright watermark does not appear on reprints
Go to the top The "Super Moon" - March 19, 2011"March 16, 2011: Mark your calendar. On March 19th, a full Moon of rare size and beauty will rise in the east at sunset. It's a super "perigee moon"--the biggest in almost 20 years. "The last full Moon so big and close to Earth occurred in March of 1993," says Geoff Chester of the US Naval Observatory in Washington DC. "I'd say it's worth a look." Full Moons vary in size because of the oval shape of the Moon's orbit. It is an ellipse with one side (perigee) about 50,000 km closer to Earth than the other (apogee). Nearby perigee moons are about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than lesser moons that occur on the apogee side of the Moon's orbit."
I went up to Vashon Elementary School to get some high ground, and shoot as soon after moonrise as possible. Canon EOS 5D Mk II, EF 70-200mm f2.8L zoom lens @ 280mm; 1.4x extender; ISO 3200; manual exposure, f22 at 200th sec. ^ Drop down to see more choices ^ My copyright watermark does not appear on reprints
Go to the top La LunaMarch 19, 2010, exactly one year before the "Super Moon"! As I recall, I shot this while actually photographing a Vultures lacrosse game down at the Vashon High School stadium.
Canon EOS 5D Mk II, EF 70-200mm f2.8L zoom lens @ 280mm; 1.4x extender; handheld; ISO 6400, manual exposure 250th sec at f16 Another photo that hews to the alleged "Rule of Thirds" thing pretty closely... ^ Drop down to see more choices ^ My copyright watermark does not appear on reprints
