1LT Robert Bennedsen

Robert Niels Bennedsen, First Lieutenant 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, United States Army and Vashon Island High School Class of 2004, was killed in Afghanistan by an IED on Sunday, July 18, 2010.

Robert's birthday was celebrated June 18, 2011.

A memorial service was held for Robert at the Vashon Island High School stadium on Sunday, August 1, 2010.

Robert's football jersey and number were retired at halftime ceremonies during the Port Townsend football game, Friday, September 17, 2010.

 

A plaque honoring Robert and the Visitors Memorial Bench has been installed at the entrance to Vashon Island High School's Pirates Stadium.

 

The first annual 1st Lt Robert N. Bennedsen Memorial Scholarship was awarded at the Vashon Community Scholarship Awards ceremony, May 25, 2011.

Robert's memory was honored by a new Vashon Community Scholarship Award Foundation award, the "1st Lt Robert Bennedsen Memorial Scholarship" for the first time in May of 2011.

Robert's football jersey and number were retired at halftime ceremonies during the Port Townsend football game, Friday, September 17, 2010.

Despite a torrential downpour (that stopped over halftime!) family and friends of 1LT Robert Bennedsen attended the home Pirate football game against Port Townsend to witness the retirement of Robert's football jersey and number 32 at halftime ceremonies.

Robert's mother Tracy, father Scott, and sister Jamie were presented with a signed game ball, and a hand-carved wooden American flag emblazened with the insignia of the 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment.

A brand-new (and much needed!) visitor's bleachers were dedicated in memory of Robert, donated by a contribution from the Vashon Island High School Bounty Club.

After the game (the Pirates beat Port Townsend, 36-8!) the Pirate football team and Pirate cheerleaders sang the Vashon Island High School fight song for Tracy and Jamie.
